How to get the fruit seed out of its pit and what I did with a cherry tree seed pit and its skin.
Fruit tree seeds are found in hard pits. I broke the pits by using a hammer.
I went to an area where cement was and held the pit in between two fingers, on its side, not lying down flat. I hammered down gently but firmly until the pit broke into pieces. The seed can be warped and tiny, or it can be perfectly almond shaped:). Sometimes the seed itself will crack, so don't be discouraged. Just crack enough pits that you will get enough seeds that survive the beating in order to be able to grow sprouts from:)
Cherry seeds are different. They are very small and very hard. I cracked them open with a wrench. The inside of the wrench I used was pointed oval shape with jagged edges. I placed the cherry seed at the back of this jagged pointed oval center and cracked the cherry. Putting it at the back of the pointed oval center helps protect the cherry seed inside from cracking itself, but cracks the pit in half really well! This is what you want.
For germinating the cherry seed, I put it in the fridge. After maybe a week, I then pulled off the skin of the cherry which is very thick! It's literally like two layers that you have to pull off, so make sure you get the complete skin off. You know you took all the skin off if you end up with a seed that is white, maybe silky and smooth:)
So that is my experience in cracking the pits of fruit trees and what to do with cherry tree seed pits and skins.
